In the UK
The British government wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. This action plan was initiated by Alan Johnson, The Education Secretary in 2006.
Five environmental education programmes were run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Eco-schools
46 countries around the world run the Eco-Schools programme, linking more than 40,000 schools – from the UK to France, from Morocco to South Africa.
'Eco-Schools' is administered in England by
Keep Britain Tidy; in Scotland by
Keep Scotland Beautiful; in Wales by
Keep Wales Tidy; and in Northern Ireland by
Tidy Northern Ireland.
Eco-Schools programme provides numerous opportunities to link to the
new curriculum such as
Citizenship,
Personal and Social Education, and
Education for Sustainable
Development (ESD) .

The programme schools work on 9
environmental topics including;
water, biodiversity, energy, global perspective, healthy living, litter, schools grounds, transport and waste.
It also helps school
save money.
On 28 January 2010, The new
Seccretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls (Ministry created in 2007) set out a plan of action to help schools to join
the fight against climate change — and at the same time save money.
Last, it helps get
recognition.Indeed, schools work towards gaining one of three awards –
Bronze, Silver and the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field
of environmental activity.
